{"id":1454,"date":"2023-10-07T15:56:20","date_gmt":"2023-10-07T14:56:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/chordiality.com\/?p=1454"},"modified":"2024-02-18T15:06:35","modified_gmt":"2024-02-18T15:06:35","slug":"a-standing-ovation-in-keighley","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/chordiality.com\/index.php\/2023\/10\/07\/a-standing-ovation-in-keighley\/","title":{"rendered":"A standing ovation in Keighley"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The elegance of Keighley\u2019s famous Cliffe Castle Museum resounded to a magnificent performance by the Chordiality singers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A full house, with standing room only, greeted the choir in the grandeur of the Museum\u2019s acoustically-beautiful art gallery, the Bracewell Smith Hall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The singers returned the compliment with a tremendous display that was only surpassed by the comments from audience members.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMore than one said that it was our best concert ever,\u201d said Music Director Peter Sherlock. &nbsp;\u201cOthers commented on how \u2018excellent\u2019 the choir sounded.&nbsp; It was just a terrific performance and the standing ovation at the end was well deserved.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Good cause<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Following the afternoon concert, Chordiality invited its current adopted charity, the Bradford Baby Bank, to make a closing collection and over \u00a3400 was raised on the day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/chordiality.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/Chordiality-at-Cliffe-Castle-Museum-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1455\" srcset=\"https:\/\/chordiality.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/Chordiality-at-Cliffe-Castle-Museum-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/chordiality.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/Chordiality-at-Cliffe-Castle-Museum-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/chordiality.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/Chordiality-at-Cliffe-Castle-Museum-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/chordiality.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/Chordiality-at-Cliffe-Castle-Museum-1536x1024.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/chordiality.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/Chordiality-at-Cliffe-Castle-Museum-2048x1366.jpg 2048w, https:\/\/chordiality.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/Chordiality-at-Cliffe-Castle-Museum-1568x1046.jpg 1568w, https:\/\/chordiality.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/Chordiality-at-Cliffe-Castle-Museum-24x16.jpg 24w, https:\/\/chordiality.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/Chordiality-at-Cliffe-Castle-Museum-36x24.jpg 36w, https:\/\/chordiality.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/Chordiality-at-Cliffe-Castle-Museum-48x32.jpg 48w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Chordiality opening with <em>Pastime With Good Company<\/em> at Cliffe Castle Museum<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The choir were joined at the concert by guest artists, wind and saxophone quartet Notability.&nbsp; The singers and musicians have worked together in a number of recent concerts and combined to thrill their audience with a superb rendition of Duke Ellington\u2019s jazz standard <em>It Don\u2019t Mean A Thing<\/em> and a dramatic closing medley from Andrew Lloyd Webber\u2019s <em>The Phantom Of The Opera<\/em>, which brought the house to their feet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Standout favourites with the audience were the <em>Hallelujah Chorus<\/em>, from Handel\u2019s <em>Messiah<\/em>, the spiritual <em>(Dem) Dry Bones<\/em>, arranged by Mark Hayes, and the traditional New Zealand sea shanty <em>Wellerman<\/em>, arranged by Craig McLeish.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Control and precision<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The singers explored new heights in their performance of a programme that they knew well.&nbsp; Particular highlights for Peter Sherlock were the choir\u2019s performance of Ola Gjeilo\u2019s <em>The Ground<\/em>, taken from the composer\u2019s <em>Sunrise Mass<\/em>, and Gabriel Faur\u00e9\u2019s sublime <em>Cantique De Jean Racine<\/em>.&nbsp; Both challenging pieces that demand a high level of vocal dexterity and finesse from the performers. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Said Peter: \u201cThe overall quality of our singing has improved so much in recent years and this really showed in these two pieces, probably the best we\u2019ve delivered them.&nbsp; We explored a real deftness of control, particular in the quiet sections, such that the pieces rose to a whole new level.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI was really impressed with the venue, which offered a rich, warm acoustic and really enhanced the sound.&nbsp; A standing ovation was a truly fitting reward for a fabulous performance by both singers and musicians.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The elegance of Keighley\u2019s famous Cliffe Castle Museum resounded to a magnificent performance by the Chordiality singers.
